The HTC One is Now a Windows Phone

HTC announced the Windows version of the HTC One, its flagship Android phone. The Windows model, with the unfortunately long name “HTC One M8 for Windows,” sports the same specs as its Android counterpart, including an aluminum body, a lowly 4-megapixel camera, a 5-inch full HD screen, and Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor. It will be available only on Verizon.

Jason Mackenzie, president of HTC America, unveiled the phone at a small event in New York. HTC’s jump into Windows, while maintaining a hold in Android, marks “the first time a smartphone manufacturer has launched an iconic device in multiple operating systems without making any compromises,” he said.

Today’s announcement came just hours after HTC unveiled the Butterfly 2 at an event in Japan. The polycarbonate-shelled device has a much more impressive camera sensor than the M8 (13 megapixels) but the same processor. And what it lacks in aluminum shine it gains in water resistance.

So far, it looks like the Butterfly 2, like its predecessor, will be available only in Asia. Meanwhile, the M8 for Windows, running Windows 8.1, is available online today starting at noon, and tomorrow in stores for $99. Like the Android version, it works with the cool Dot View Case, a case with a flap that lets through dots of light from the phone’s screen while closed and allows access to Cortana, the Windows voice assistant.
